The World’s Largest Truck Convoy is set to take place on Sept. 20 to raise funds for Special Olympics athletes.
Police will escort more than 100 trucks on Highway 41 in Wisconsin from Richfield to Oshkosh for the convoy’s 10th anniversary. The event marks the end of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week which takes place this year from Sept. 14-20.
Last year, 136 trucks participated in the convoy and raised $92,000 for the 10,000 Special Olympics athletes in Wisconsin. The World’s Largest Truck Convoy has raised nearly $699,000 since 2005 and and a total of 1,075 trucks have participated.
The drivers in the convoy often send a lot of time getting their trucks prepped for the day and some arrive with banners hanging from grills or use painters tape to write messages on their trailers, according to Special Olympics event organizers.
A short opening ceremony and live auction to determine the lead truck spots will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Travel Plaza and at 10:15 a.m. police will escort the trucks on the 53-mile journey.
The route ends at the Experimental Aircraft Association office in Oshkosh where there will be a celebration with live music, awards, raffles, an auction and a tailgate party.
Special Olympics programs in 13 states and four Canadian provinces will host similar events to celebrate truckers and build awareness of the Special Olympics.
