The Teamsters union has filed a lawsuit against Consolidated Freightways for invading employees’ privacy rights by installing hidden cameras in bathrooms at CF’s Mira Loma, CA, terminal.
The Menlo Park, CA-based carrier has maintained that the cameras were necessary to combat rising drug activity and theft at the terminal, its largest in the country.
But Michael Myers, an attorney for Local 63 of the Teamsters union, disagrees. “CF has really stuck their foot in their mouth,” he said. “They’ve basically said that in order to combat illegal activity, they’re going to break the law.”
The lawsuit, which represented about 300 people at press time, was filed yesterday in Riverside County Superior Court.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigated the terminal on Sept. 10, after a hidden camera was found behind a mirror in an employee bathroom. Two more mirrors were subsequently found in and around another bathroom.
The Riverside District Attorney’s Office is still considering prosecution. (See Sept. 30 news.)
