The newly organized Teamster Union Port Division is throwing its support behind two pieces of legislation that supporters say are designed to clean up California ports.

Thursday at a joint press conference in San Francisco, Teamsters representatives and members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union said they will push for passage of a two-bill legislative package.
One measure would require that port truckers limit the amount of time they idle their trucks. The fines however, would be levied against port operators, not the truck drivers.
The other proposal would require all truck chassis hauled out of California ports be certified as safe before they are released from a port to operate on public highways.
The announcement comes on the heels of news in December in which the newly created Teamsters Port Division said they would work with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the International Longshoremen’s Association to try and organize 50,000 of the nation’s port truck drivers into a union, in a an effort to improve working conditions.
