Tailwind Management Systems Inc. is offering its clients a more efficient way to handle their I.F.T.A. Fuel Tax paperwork.

A trucking company must report what miles were driven by each of its trucks in every jurisdiction, every three months. It used to be a trucking company had to file individually for each jurisdiction, meaning a great deal of paperwork had to be completed. However, a few years ago I.F.T.A. was introduced and a trucking company could then choose its base state, and that state would then in turn file with each of the other jurisdictions.
For example, a truck travels 300 miles through the State of Washington, getting five miles to the gallon. In theory, the truck will consume 60 gallons of fuel to drive through Washington.
Washington State then expects that the truck owner will now pay them the taxes on 60 gallons of fuel. If the tax rate in Washington is $0.06 cents per gallon and that truck did not purchase fuel in Washington, the truck owner owes Washington $3.60 worth of taxes. If the truck purchased 100 gallons of fuel while traversing the state, then Washington State owes that truck the difference.
Lynda Clare, Tailwind's manager of client services, who has many years of experience running trucking companies, said the new Tailwind
I.F.T.A. Fuel Tax Module will greatly assist transportation companies in handling their reporting obligations.
With Tailwind's new Fuel Tax Module, users can compile all dispatches (pick up and drop locations) and fuel purchases for the fleet, which are organized by unit number and fuel tax quarter. Users can also scroll through the dispatches and fuel purchases to organize them in a logical order, in addition to being able to insert or delete a location if needed.
Lastly, the Fuel Tax Module will show the jurisdictional miles on the screen, enabling the user to export the information to a fuel tax program and print a report that can be used to fill out I.F.T.A. forms.
Based in Vancouver BC, Tailwind Management Systems Inc., has installations across North America. Tailwind provides next-generation transportation software systems for LTL, full-load trucking and freight brokerage companies. Tailwind applications are fully integrated with leading industry mileage, accounting, GPS tracking and fuel monitoring systems.
