Volvo Trucks North America Inc. has announced that Swift Transportation, Phoenix, Ariz., placed an order for 50 Volvo VN tractors. The new VNs are to be delivered early in the second quarter of this year.
The 50 Volvo VN670 tractors will go into Swift's fleet for service on dedicated, high-mileage routes. The tandem-axle VN670s are equipped with Cummins ISX engines rated at 400 hp. The VN670 combines a modern, ergonomic driver's environment and a spacious sleeper.
"Volvo Trucks is very pleased to welcome Swift Transportation as a new customer and we think this represents the beginning of a fruitful relationship for both companies," said Scott Kress, Volvo Trucks senior vice president of sales. "Swift is a leader and innovator in the trucking industry."
Jerry Moyes, chief executive officer of Swift, said, "We are excited to start testing the new Volvo VN as well as the Cummins ISX. The industry and our company are at a crossroads for purchasing new equipment due to the new EPA'02 engine requirements. We will replace nearly 16,000 units currently in service over the next four years, plus buy for future growth. We need to evaluate the options available now or in the near future to make the best and most cost-effective purchasing decision as we go forward."
Volvo Trucks North America is a member of the Volvo Group, a publicly held company headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. With annual sales of about $18 billion, Volvo's business areas include heavy trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine and industrial drive systems, aerospace and financial services.
