A new study by Maine's Department of Transportation claims there aren't enough parking spaces in the south part of the state to accommodate long-haul truck drivers who need a rest.

The study suggests signs be put up to let truckers know where they can park, and it makes other recommendations such as new facilities and public-private partnerships.
The report also includes a survey that shows 27% of truckers pull over and rest at off-ramps and shoulders every week, with 17% doing so every day. They say they are forced to use off-ramps and shoulders because rest areas are often full and there are no other facilities nearby. In addition, public rest areas don't have proper security, parking space or restrooms such as those found at truckstops.
The department has posted a draft of the report on its web site at www.state.me.us/mdot and hopes for comments from truckers who use Maine highways.
