Interstate 90 remained closed through Snoqualmie Pass in Washington state early this morning after snow left the area’s primary east-west artery littered with damaged and abandoned vehicles.
According to Associated Press reports, the freeway shut down late last night thanks to multiple spinouts and abandoned vehicles. State transportation crews hoped to get the road reopened by midday today.
Snow also shut down Washington 410 through Chinook Pass, east of Mount Rainier, and Washington 20 through North Cascades National Park. Avalanche control crews were going to check out the conditions of those roads to determine if they need to remain closed for the rest of the winter season.
A Washington State Patrol spokeswoman told the AP that before I-90 was closed, accidents in the snow and slush caused a 50-mile backup from North Bend, 30 miles west of the past, to Elk Heights on the east side.
U.S. 2 was closed through Stevens Pass for about two and a half hours because of bad weather before being reopened last night, according to the state Transportation Department. Motorists traveling through the pass were required to use chains early today.
Snow tires were required on U.S. 12 through White Pass and on the Mount Baker Highway, Washington 542.
A snow advisory for the southern Washington Cascades was canceled early this morning by the National Weather Service but remained in effect for the north and central Washington Cascades, with additional accumulations of 3 to 5 inches of snow predicted through the morning.
