ATA's Safety Management Council honored its 2009 award winners during its Safety & Human Resources National Conference & Exhibition in Baltimore last weekend
. The ATA awarded its President's Trophy to Wal-Mart Transportation, Bentonville, Ark., A. Duie Pyle, West Chester, Pa., and CVS Transportation, Woonsocket, R.I.
The President's Trophy recognizes the three companies whose fleets have been judged to have the best overall safety programs from the Truck & Industrial Safety Contests. These contests judge motor carriers from across the United States on their safety accomplishments and safety records relative to others within their operation type and size. The top three are honored for their superior safety achievements, outstanding commitment to industry-wide safety and extensive promotion of safety among all highway users.
Wal-Mart was recognized in the large fleet category, while A. Duie Pyle was recognized in the mid-size fleet category. CVS was honored in the small fleet category.
Keith Suits of Rite Aid Rome Distribution Center in Rome, N.Y., was honored as National Driver of the Year, while John Spiros of Roehl Transport, Marshfield, Wis., took home the National Safety Director Award. Other awards included the Excellence in Safety award, which went to the North Carolina Trucking Association; the Excellence in Human Resource Management award, which went to Pitt Ohio Express in Pittsburgh; and the Leadership Award, which went to Michael Baker, CDS, Usher Transport, Louisville, Ky.
