Roadway Express and Job Corps, a U.S. Department of Labor program, have
partnered to develop an advanced tractor-trailer driver training program for
Job Corps students.

The program consists of six months of rigorous training, including classroom and homework assignments; 100 hours of driving time; and preparation for the written commercial driver's license exam and for road skills testing.
In February Francis Baffour, Marcel Madina and Lamar Grubbs became the program’s first graduates. Grubbs is now driving long-haul for Roadway out of the
company's Chicago Heights, Ill., facility. Baffour will join the company in April.
Five more students are expected to graduate in April.
The pilot advanced training program was established at the Earl C. Clements Job
Corps Center in Morganfield, Ky. Roadway provides program instructors and equipment for the program, which includes a "job shadowing" final evaluation at a Roadway facility before graduation. Job placement assistance is provided after graduation.
"This is a great opportunity for Roadway to utilize its expertise in truck driver
training and development to assist young adults who want to enter our industry,"
said Tom Lopienski, vice president of human resources for the carrier. "We are
committed to helping America's youth enjoy a good quality of life. Roadway's
partnership with Job Corps allows us to provide a win-win opportunity for
Roadway and deserving youth."
