The request for a third truck stop in St. Rose, La., was expected to go under fire Wednesday night by a local planning and zoning commission.
An application by New Orleans businessman Kevin M. Kelly to run the truckstop with video poker machines was heard by the St. Charles Parish Planning and Zoning Commission. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the request has evoked opposition from industrial neighbors and parish residents because it would be the third truckstop along a one-mile stretch of Airline Drive.
"I don't think there's a whole lot of support for truckstops," Planning and Zoning Department Director Bob Lambert said.
Kelly says he wants to put 50 video poker machines in the truckstop's casino, the maximum allowed by state law.
The parish's Planning and Zoning Department recommended that the commission deny Kelly's permit, saying the truckstop isn't compatible with surrounding businesses, the paper reported.
