Qualcomm Inc. has introduced security features for its OmniTRACS mobilecom system, including what they call a vehicle immobilization device – referred to as a VID – that enables the driver to place the truck in a ”restricted mobility” mode.

The device resembles an automobile remote and with the push of a button, can shut down a truck at the computer level. If a driver clicks the device while at a truckstop for example the truck cannot be started – period – until the driver uses the device once more. The device would also shut down a running truck, as long as it was still in range of the small transmitter.
The device works with Qualcomm’s wireless panic button to increase the security of load and driver.
In addition to working with the VID, the wireless panic button allows drivers to signal an emergency, including their current location. Emergency alerts are sent to the customer’s dispatch and to Qualcomm’s Network Operations Center.
Qualcomm also introduced a security integration package including a high-risk load monitoring application and enables fleets to customize the frequency of position reports based on commodity codes, high-risk areas or out-of-route violations. An exception alert can be generated if a vehicle has made an unauthorized stop or trailer drop, if the truck’s ignition is turned off prior to delivery or if the driver fails to report in. Customized route alerts can be dispatched via pager or e-mail to specified users according to the severity of the exception.
According to Qualcomm, the vehicle immobilization device and security integration package have been deployed with a number of high-value cargo and hazardous materials carriers throughout the U.S.
