Planners of a proposed truckstop in Conyers, GA, failed to win a zoning change needed to build the facility at I-20 and Sigman Road.

The Rockdale County Commission voted unanimously to amend the county zoning ordinance to allow truckstops - but only on property with a heavy industrial zoning classification, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That would not let William Corey build a truckstop on his 35-acre site, which is close to a residential neighborhood.
Neighbors packed a hearing last week to protest the proposed truckstop, saying it would have brought pollution, crime and prostitution.
Corey's only hope, other than a lawsuit, is for a favorable review of a development plan by the county's planning and review staff. His lawyer says the planning and engineering staff's review should be done under the laws that existed before the zoning ordinance was amended - when there were no zoning provisions at all for pumping fuel to heavy trucks.
If that doesn't work, the issue could go to court.
