The National Private Truck Council named Gary Frank Petty its new president and CEO,
announced NPTC Chairman Daniel P. Smith.
Petty has 15 years of experience in transportation and association management, according to the NPTC announcement.
He was president and CEO of the National Moving and Storage Assn. before its 1998 merger with the American Movers Conference, now called the American Moving and Storage Assn.
He also served as president of two van line agencies, Johnson/United International of Denver and Victory/Allied International of Alexandria, Va., and as senior vice president of the Tire Assn. of North America.
"(Petty) brings an exceptional background of educational, legal and association management leadership in the transportation field and will be immensely helpful to us in building an even stronger association," Smith said.
Petty has two advanced degrees: a Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan, and a Juris Doctorate from the Widener University School of Law. He is a Certified Association Executive and, among other writings, co-authored a book on educational leadership.
Petty, who fills the post vacated last fall by former NPTC President John McQuaid, comes to NPTC during a time of change. The association has implemented a restructuring plan to adapt to market forces that are changing the role of private fleet management among the nation’s manufacturers. The plan cuts dues and opens up membership to kindred transportation interests, with the aim of growing the organization and its influence. (See "NPTC Downsizing to Cut Expenses," 7/14/2000.)
NPTC, based in Alexandria, Va., has about 900 total members, including some of the nation’s largest manufacturing, retailing and distributing corporations.
