“The company has said publicly that Beta 1 of Longhorn would arrive by the end of 2005, though internally, the company has been aiming for a release by midyear. The final version of Longhorn is slated for the second half of next year,” CNET said.
According to CNET, the new Windows will include a number of new components, among them a presentation engine called Avalon and a Web services architecture called Indigo. Also expected is an improved method to install the system over large numbers of computers.
A new file system known as WinFS had been part of the project, was rumored dropped, and is now rumored back in the expected Longhorn release.
