The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced the recall of nearly 1,000 Peterbilts for a possible engine fire problem.

Peterbilts manufactured between December 1997 and December 1998 and equipped with 1998 Caterpillar 3406E engines may have a routing problem of the fuel lines and the engine wiring that can cause rubbing on the fuel line, which could result in a fire in the engine compartment.
Dealers will inspect the wiring and, if there is evidence of rubbing, the electrical harness and/or fuel lines will be replaced and routed correctly. Owner notification was to begin during March 2000. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Peterbilt at (510) 790-4013.
