Palm Beach Sheriff Wants To Enforce Truck Regs

The sheriff of Palm Beach County in Florida is asking the county commission to create a sheriff's office commercial vehicle enforcement unit.
According to The Palm Beach Post, the unit would start with two deputies. Both are former DOT police officers, and one was a top DOT trainer. Within three years, the sheriff would like to see the unit expanded to five deputies. The office also is going after a federal DOT grant to buy a portable truck scale.
Sheriff Ed Bieluch says the county saw nearly 1,400 crashes involving commercial vehicles between July 1999 and June 2000. One of his first priorities would be the parade of dump trucks hauling out of the Palm Beach Aggregates quarry.
DOT spokesman Dave Browning told the paper that while he would welcome the additional help, it would be important for the deputies to be properly trained in commercial vehicle enforcement and to be coordinated with DOT police, including access to DOT's computer tracking system of citations statewide.
