The Oregon legislature may try to curb roadside disposal of urine-filled bottles with fines and stiff penalties for truckers.

The House Transportation Committee has endorsed a bill that would make improper disposal of human waste punishable by fines of up to $2,500. If the person convicted is a commercial driver, the penalty might also include license suspension.
State highway officials say roadside urine bottle disposal is a mounting and expensive problem. Because urine is considered a potentially hazardous waste, the bottles must be collected by special crews. Last year a group of state lawmakers touring eastern Oregon highways was shown a pickup load of urine-filled bottles collected from area roadsides.
The Oregon Trucking Assn. has not opposed the law, but is asking that penalties be applied equally to everyone.
