The Interstate 40 bridge that collapsed in Oklahoma in May will be rebuilt sooner than expected, but will also cost more to replace.

Originally, officials estimated it would take six months to rebuild the bridge, which collapsed in late May after being hit by a barge on the river below. Fourteen people were killed. According to published reports, officials with the company contracted to rebuild the bridge say they can complete the job by early August.
Whereas original estimates put the replacement cost at $15 million, now officials believe it could cost as much as $30 million. The state will pay the construction company a bonus for every hour it finishes ahead of schedule – and will penalize it the same amount for every hour finished beyond the scheduled due date.
