The Ohio General Assembly is trying to help ease the driver shortage by allowing joint vocational schools to offer truck driver training.
The House has adopted Senate-passed legislation permitting the schools to offer training courses. If the Senate agrees with House changes, the bill will head to the governor for signing.
There are 11 commercial-driver- training schools in Ohio, but public schools are not currently permitted to offer the courses unless they arrange partnerships with private firms.
The bill also contains provisions for testing and hiring disabled individuals as truck drivers under some circumstances.
