Separate measures being considered in the North Dakota legislature would raise speed limits and increase penalties for speeding.

According to The Bismarck (N.D.) Tribune, one bill would increase the top speed on the Interstate from 70 to 75 mph. Another calls for a uniform 65-mph limit on the state’s two-lane highways, dropping the current nighttime limit of 55 mph. Sponsors believe there is more support for a round-the-clock 65 mph limit on two-lane roads than there is for raising the Interstate limit to 75.
Two more bills address speeding fines and license points. Lawmakers say they want to discourage speeding through fines, but are afraid more points on licenses would affect drivers’ insurance premiums.
