North Carolina's governor last week signed into law a "truck safety" measure that doubles fines for truckers.

The law, which takes effect Dec. 1, creates a system of fines for truck owners and drivers caught violating federal trucking regulations.
The bill has a separate points scale for commercial drivers, and also says that anyone who commits an offense while operating a commercial motor vehicle "may be assessed double the amount of any fine or penalty authorized by statute."
It also more than doubles the minimum fine for anyone - not just truckers - caught speeding in a construction zone.
The state is also conducting more truck inspections, keeping weigh stations open longer, and will ban trucks from the left lane on sections of some interstates.
The North Carolina Trucking Assn. supported the bill, but it wants the state to measure how successful it is in improving truck safety.
