Starting in June 2002, straight trucks and delivery vans registered in New York will be required to have cross-view backup mirrors.

Gov. George Pataki has said he will sign the bill, which will require the convex mirrors on commercial vehicles that are 8.5 to 18 feet long and have a cube-style or enclosed delivery bay. Each mirror costs about $70, according to published reports.
The new law is called "Joey's law," because it was prompted by the 1996 death of 5-year-old Joseph Henderson, killed by a delivery truck backing out of his driveway.
Pataki vetoed a similar bill last year; it was revised this year to apply only to vehicles registered in the state.
The mirrors are also being considered on the federal level. Late last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a notice of proposed rulemaking that would require the mirrors on straight trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 to 26,000 pounds.
