The state of New York has begun cracking down on enforcing how much smoke diesel engine exhaust stacks can release.

Legislation was passed in 1998 that forced roadside smoke testing to begin June 1999. The law required that all heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles be subject to spot roadside emission testing.
But according to Bill Joyce, President of the New York Motor Truck Association, no tickets were issued to violators.
"They’ve been simply issuing warnings for over a year," said Joyce.
Now the state is getting tough. Truckers could face a fine of up to $1,300 if they fail the tests and don’t get the problems corrected within 30 days.
"Carriers have had plenty of opportunities to prepare," said Joyce.
