Republicans in the New York state Assembly are calling for a suspension of the state's 4 percent sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel during the summer months.

Assembly Minority Leader John Faso says it's not fair for the state to benefit from higher fuel prices.
Democrats, who control the chamber, say they'll look at the proposal. But they criticized Republicans for voting down a similar bill last year. The Republicans, however, say last year's proposal was included in an overall spending plan they opposed.
Gov. George Pataki's office said the administration is "always willing to take a look at additional ways we can reduce the tax burden on New Yorkers."
Suspending fuel taxes could also help boost tourism in the state, supporters said.
