Sirius Satellite Radio announced it will introduce a new, second generation chipset for its satellite radios during the fourth quarter of this year, and in the meantime is offering a rebate to make its radios more affordable.

Sirius says the new chipset represents a quantum leap in technology that will allow them to cut system costs by almost 50 percent.
The new design reduces the entire component dimensions to the size of a credit card, from that of a videocassette today. It requires 50 percent less power and offers better heat management. These features are key to allowing radio manufacturers to offer a fully integrated receiver in vehicle dashboards.
In the meantime, Sirius is offering a $75 national consumer rebate, bringing the cost of a Sirius Satellite Radio down to as low as $175.
The mail-in rebate offer is available August 15 through November 17.
