Navistar International is temporarily shutting down its Indianapolis engine plant because of a slump in demand for Ford trucks, for which International builds Powerstroke diesel engines.
According to published reports, the plant will be shut down starting Friday, until July 14. It already had been slated to be closed for the first half of July for a regularly scheduled annual maintenance shutdown.
The temporary closure will affect about 500 workers.
Spokesman Roy Wiley told the Indianapolis Business Journal that "It's all driven by Ford demand, or lack thereof," and mentioned high fuel prices and the housing market as contributing factors.
International supplies diesel engines to Ford Motor Co.'s Louisville truck assembly plant, which is closing for a month due to slowing demand.
