A new state law goes into effect today in Michigan requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down when passing emergency vehicles by the side of the road.

The law was prompted by an accident last year where a tractor-trailer hit a police cruiser parked on the side of the road, killing the officer who was writing a speeding ticket next to his car.
The new law requires drivers to put at least one lane between them and an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. If the road is too narrow or too congested to move over, the law requires drivers to slow down while passing the emergency vehicle.
Violators can be charged with a misdemeanor and face a $500 fine or up to 90 days in jail if convicted. If the violation results in a death or injury, the driver could face up to 15 years in prison and a $7,500 fine.
