The Missouri Senate has passed a proposal that would ask the state’s voters to approve a hike in the state’s fuel tax by 6 cents per gallon.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the tax, along with a three-eighths cents increase in the sales tax, would raise nearly $500 million for roads in the state. The taxes, if approved by voters in August, would end in 10 years unless approved again by voters.
“Lawmakers and others have complained for years about the amount of money that flows from state road funds to other agencies, such as the auditor’s office,” reports the Post-Dispatch. “Under the legislation, only the Highway Patrol would get money from these road funds.”
The Senate bill now moves to the House.
