In August, Missouri voters will decide whether to raise the state’s fuel taxes by 4 cents a gallon.

The legislation, passed in a last-minute rush on the last day of the session, would raise an estimated $431 million for state highways, roads, bridges and public transportation.
The fuel tax, as well as another half-cent sales tax, would be in effect until July 2013 “unless extended by a vote of the people.”
The measure also would establish an inspector general within the department of transportation.
Gov. Bob Holden also signed another bill that indefinitely extends a 6-cent fuel tax passed by the Legislature in 1992 that had been scheduled to end in 2008.
