The Michigan Department of Transportation wants to double the number of customs and immigration officials to deal with increased traffic, especially trucks, with the opening of a second bridge to Canada.

The original Blue Water Bridge between Port Huron and Sarnia, Ontario, was closed for refurbishing after a twin span went into service in July 1997. The older span is scheduled to reopen this weekend.
Truck traffic on the bridge is expected to double to 3 million a year by 2006, according to transportation officials. There are currently 15 immigration and 50 customs agent in Port Huron, but the state is planning to ask the federal government to double that number.
The state will also spend $4.7 million next year to expand and improve the truck waiting area.
