The OEM made the announcement at the NTEA Work Truck Show, where it is publicly showing the powerplant for the first time. The Detroit DD5 is the first of two new medium duty engines, with the Detroit DD8 planned to follow in 2018.

The proprietary engine platform was first announced in October 2014, and in November 2015, it was announced that DTNA would invest $375 million to bring medium duty engine production to its Redford, Michigan facility. Initial production of the medium duty line will take place in Manheim, Germany before shifting to the U.S. in 2018.

The DD5 will be first aimed at P&D applications and DTNA added that “more extensive availability throughout DTNA’s product portfolio will begin when production shifts to the Redford facility.”

The DD5 will initially offer a 210HP/575ft-lb torque and a 230HP/660ft-lb torque rating. The OEM also announced the engines will have a 45,000 mile maintenance interval and will be equipped with the Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostics service.

DTNA also noted that the DD5, along with all other Detroit engines, will meet GHG2017 standards early.

“We are excited to first unveil the DD5 here at the NTEA Work Truck Show and offer customers their look at what is a proud new addition to the Detroit engines lineup,” said Kary Schaefer, general manager marketing and strategy, DTNA. “We fully expect that as customers come to realize the total cost advantage of running these reliable and efficient DD5 engines in their fleets, they will demand Detroit as the engine of choice as they have with the heavy-duty DD13, DD15, and DD16 engines.”
