A decline in heavy truck sales may mean layoffs for Mack Truck workers in the second half of the year.
During a routine visit to the company's Winnsboro, SC, plant company president Michel Gigou told an Associated Press reporter they were trying to find a solution to slowing demand that wouldn't hurt workers, but the market has weakened and not expected to rebound until 2003.
In March Gigou said that Mack's backlog would probably keep them running regular hours, with little or no overtime, until the scheduled summer vacation shutdown in late July. Word now is that that shutdown will likely stretch to three weeks. The company added a second shift at the Winnsboro plant last year and some speculate it will go back to one after summer break.
