Mack Introduces PowerLeash Engine Brake System

Mack Trucks Inc. has introduced the PowerLeash engine brake, which is now available on Mack’s Application Specific Engine Technology (ASET) engines, providing drivers with improved vehicle braking control.

Mack’s balanced design approach integrates the PowerLeash brake within the base engine envelope, saving 50 pounds over other engine brakes. The breakthrough design addresses customer requirements for a system that provides maximum braking performance, light weight, ease of operation and improved serviceability.

"Over half of Mack’s customers spec an engine brake in their truck purchases today, and we expect that figure to grow as drivers become aware of the PowerLeash brake and its improved vehicle control," said Tom Kelly, vice president of marketing. "The PowerLeash brake is an important advance for both highway and vocational customers because its strengths address the most frequent areas of customer concern with engine brake systems today."

One major advantage of the PowerLeash brake is improved performance throughout the engine operating range, reaching 420 braking horsepower at 2100 rpm. Drivers will appreciate not only the control they gain with this braking power but also the near-instantaneous response. The PowerLeash brake delivers a 50% reduction in brake response time – a noticeable improvement. Quick response enhances the downshifting performance of automated manual transmissions.

In addition to its performance advantages, the PowerLeash brake has reliability designed in -- with internal components that are precision-machined to exacting tolerances for long life. The adjusting screw and actuator pin are designed as separate, solid pieces to resist wear and stand up to years of service. An internal oil screen provides an additional layer of protection from any particles in the oil, while electrical components are on the cold side of the engine away for heat sources.

The PowerLeash brake is also technician-friendly -- injectors can be serviced without removing the rocker shaft and valve lash is easy to set.

The PowerLeash brake is being introduced at the 2003 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, and will be available for inclusion into customer spec’s in the second quarter of 2003.
