Mack Trucks says its 2001 deliveries through March were down 32 percent from the 10,184 units delivered during the same period last year: 6,933 vehicles.

Deliveries in South America were up 286%, but with a total of only 189 trucks, that wasn't enough to significantly offset the 34% drop in North America.
"The North American downturn continues to present serious challenges to every truck manufacturer," said Mack President & CEO Michel Gigou. "But we believe our cost reduction plan, combined with aggressive sales efforts, will keep Mack in a competitive position."
Mack announced last month that it will reduce its workforce by approximately 700 positions, or about 12 percent, by the end of July, and said it was cutting the build rate at its plants.
