Fritz Roland "Nick" Bjorklund (pronounced as though the "j" were a "y"), Driver Daily Log's creator, says commercial software companies are interested in the program he has lovingly nurtured for the past three years. He's not planning to go commercial, he said, but it isn't out of the question.
"I've been peppering the hell out of those guys for a while now," Bjorklund said of the commercial software companies, some of whom charge for software that does what his program does for free.
In some cases, Bjorklund’s free software does the job better. Bjorklund said the Florida DOT tested Drivers Daily Log for possible use auditing logs, but was so surprised it was free they asked him for a signed letter to confirm it.
Bjorklund, who came from Sweden at age 7 in 1952, initially developed the Driver Daily Log program in 1997 after driving for a short while. The semi-retired naval ship designer/engineer/software contractor/truck driver has been fine-tuning the program ever since.
The easy-to-use program works in the Windows 95/98 or NT 2000 operating systems. Its what-you-see-is-what-you-get screen looks like a printed log page but contains much more information -- continual updates of available hours under 60-hour and 70-hour scenarios, for example. The feature-rich program can do much more.
But Bjorklund admits it would be useful to link Drivers Daily Log to data from a truck's computer and GPS system, something a commercial software company could facilitate. Meanwhile, Bjorklund estimates there are approximately 40,000 Drivers Daily Log users on the road today.
Drivers Daily Log Version 2.27 (Bjorklund said he updates the program constantly) is available for free download at www.driversdailylog.com.
The file, named DRVLG227.EXE, is smaller than one megabit, so it will download quickly. Once the download is complete, users have only to double click on the file and the software will install itself.
