Clifton Parker, chairman of the Truckload Carriers Assn. (TCA), and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) have launched a Careers in Trucking pilot project.
NCLR affiliate, Congreso de Latinos Unidos of Philadelphia, Pa., will kick off the program with a recruitment and orientation event from 9 a.m. to noon today.
The event will feature truck driving simulators, representatives from schools with Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) certified CDL training courses, and carrier D.M. Bowman Inc.
The pilot project is another program spearheaded by TCA's Driver Recruitment and Retention Labor and Human Resources Committee, chaired by Ray Haight, president of MacKinnon Transport Inc. in Ontario, Canada, and Kevin Burch, president of Jet Express Inc., Dayton, Ohio.
The goal of the program is to provide truckload carriers with a new, reliable and significant source of CDL drivers, by recruiting qualified bilingual Latino drivers from communities in the USA.
The series of Careers in Trucking Information Sessions will be held today, Jan. 26 and Feb. 19 in Philadelphia.

Eligible applicants need to be at least 21 years of age, able to pass a Department of Transportation physical, able to pass a pre-employment drug test, able to communicate with the general public in English, have a clean driving record and no criminal history.
