Truckstops in the Los Angeles area are being encouraged to install devices to help truckers stop idling their trucks.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District adopted a voluntary program, known as “Rule 1634,” or the Pilot Generation Program for Truck Stops. The program lets companies earn special nitrogen oxide reduction credits for providing electricity to rigs at truckstops that eliminates the need to idle. About 20 truckstops in the AQMD’s jurisdiction conceivably could participate.
The equipment the agency is encouraging consists of consoles that attach to the side window of a truck to provide heated or cooled air, power for televisions and small appliances, as well as telephone, Internet and cable TV hookups. This describes the service offered by IdleAire, a company launched about a year ago that has received a lot of attention, including a pilot project at Hunt’s Point Market in New York.
