KonaWare, Redwood City, Calif., has introduced a mobilecom solution that combines low-cost wireless and the coverage of satellite in off-the-shelf hardware that costs less than $700 per truck.

According to KonaWare, its multi-channel mobile data solution switches automatically between T-Mobile ground-based wireless and ORBCOMM satellite networks.
Software modules include user and device authentication, preplanned and dynamic dispatch, load and unload processes, location services, asset and time management, text messaging, DOT driver logs, and status reporting. Modules can be customized for individual fleet needs.
KonaWare says the system provides driver communications, security, shipment tracking, DOT logs, geofencing and other functions. Necessary hardware includes an off-the-shelf pocket PC from HP, service on the T-Mobile network and an inexpensive satellite modem from ORBCOMM. The HP6315 Pocket PC combines Wi-Fi and wireless modems. KonaWare says the system provides coverage from any location in the US.
KonaWare's NET T&L Application Suite communicates via GPRS and WiFi from the HP’s internal modems, and only when needed, via ORBCOMM satellite modem. The satellite modem uses a small 8-inch whip antenna to connect with ORBCOMM's satellite network, and also to the GPS positioning satellites.
This combination of standard hardware is controlled by KonaWare's software, which constantly seeks the lowest cost communications channel, taking into account priority messages that need to be sent urgently, driver panic button for example.
The system can communicate via Wi-Fi when in truck stops, freight yards, or when near public Wi-Fi spots, or via T-Mobile when in range of a cellular tower, and via ORBCOMM satellite network when on the open road and out of range of T-Mobile network range.
The combined network costs are less than $25 per month per vehicle.
KonaWare Transportation Suite is also available for use on the Nextel wireless network.
