KLLM Transport Services, Richland, Miss., has enhanced the security measures at its terminal facilities, and is in the process of issuing photo-identification cards to its 1,700 drivers.
The actions are in response to the changing security needs for both shippers and carriers that resulted from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Like many companies, KLLM has found that customers want to have some proof that the driver picking up or delivering a load is who he says he is.
"The improved security measures are part of the company's efforts to protect the well being of our drivers, our equipment and our customers' products. Today's environment requires a higher level of security, and we are providing it," said Jim Richards, KLLM senior vice president for sales and customer service. "And, although KLLM's terminals are gated and fenced, the company has retained around-the-clock third party security services for its facilities that were not already manned 24 hours per day."
In addition to the improvements to its terminal facilities, KLLM is producing photo-identification cards for its drivers. From December 1, 2001, to date, 650 drivers have received their I.D. cards, which are being issued at the company's terminals in Jackson, Miss., and Bastrop, La.
"When one of our drivers passes through en route, a representative from KLLM's safety department takes their picture using a digital camera," said Jeff Barbee, KLLM's Director of Special Projects. The picture is then uploaded to a personal computer where it is combined with the driver's name, employee number, hire date, employee classification, and the I.D. card's expiration date. This becomes the front side of the card; and the reverse side contains the driver's hazardous material training certification. A wallet card, and a clip-on badge for display at customer sites, are laminated and given to the drivers on the spot.
Newly hired drivers receive their cards while participating in the company's required orientation and training program.
