The parent of truck makers Kenworth and Peterbilt has decided to stop offering Detroit Diesel engines later this year.

Although Paccar has yet to make any official announcement, inside sources with both truck makers and a Kenworth dealer, all who wish to remain unidentified, confirm the likely date Detroit Diesel engines will no longer be offered will be July 1.
Paccar spokesman Ron Ranheim refused to comment officially on the matter.
The news comes as little surprise for two reasons.
One, last year Detroit Diesel was purchased by Daimler Chrysler, the parent of Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star and therefore competitors of Paccar.
Two, last week a long-term engine supplier agreement was announced jointly between Cummins and Paccar. Unlike the deal Cummins signed with Volvo last year, this agreement does not give Cummins exclusivity, but the Paccar/Cummins announcement noted that the deal "reflects the industry trend towards closer cooperation between OEMs and engine suppliers."
