June was the worst month for net orders of commercial trailers in the second quarter, landing at 23 percent below June 2008
, according to the latest State of the Industry: U.S. Trailers report issued by ACT Research.
However, a strong April made up for the fact, delivering the best quarter in a year. New orders for the second quarter closed 11 percent below the second quarter of 2008.
"With freight volumes and trucking profits soft, demand for trailers has dropped significantly," said Kenny Vieth, partner and senior analyst with ACT Research. "However, reefer van demand, which is generally about one-fifth of the dry van market, has surpassed dry van volumes in recent months and is offsetting some of the dry van weakness."
ACT publishes of commercial vehicle industry data, market analysis and forecasting services for the North American market.
