A busy corner in suburban Dallas tops the list of the 10 most dangerous intersections in the United States, according to State Farm insurance. Three of the 10 intersections are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and three are in California.

State Farm compiled the list based on the number of crashes resulting in claims by its policyholders during 1998. The numbers were multiplied by a factor keyed to the percentage of cars insured by State Farm in the metropolitan areas in which the intersections are located.
The study defined an intersection as two roadways that intersect. If one roadway passes over another, that wasn't defined as an intersection. Therefore, the study excluded highways with ramps leading to crossing roadways.
The study found the intersection of Belt Line Road and Midway Road in Addison, TX, was the most collision-prone, producing an estimated 263 crashes last year. Two other Dallas-Fort Worth area intersections were in the top five.
The study was conducted as part of a program to focus attention on intersection safety issues. The program includes making up to $4.4 million available to communities to study and, in some cases, make physical changes to enhance safety at specific intersections.
Here's the list of the worst 10 intersections:
1. Addison, TX - Belt Line Road and Midway Road
2. Plano, TX - Park Road and Preston Road
3. Schaumburg, IL - Golf Road and Roselle Road
4. Beverly Hills, CA - Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica
5. Dallas, TX - Belt Line Road and Preston Road
6. Huntington Beach, CA - Adams Avenue and Brookhurst Street
7. Sacramento, CA - Fair Oaks Boulevard and Watt Avenue
8. Clearwater, FL - Sunset Point Road and U.S. 19
9. Las Vegas, NV - Rainbow Boulevard and Sahara Avenue
10. Chesterfield, MI - Gratiot Avenue and 23 Mile Road
