A bill that sailed through the Indiana House would allow higher speed limits on rural interstates - but not for trucks.

The bill would allow the Indiana Department of transportation to raise limits from 65 mph to 70 mph on interstates in rural areas. Speed limits on rural areas of state highways could be raised from 55 mph to 60 mph. However, speed limits for heavy trucks would remain limited to 60 mph on interstates and 55 mph on state highways, increasing the speed differential from 5 mph to 10.
The measure, which was attached as an amendment to a bill to increase fines in construction zones, doesn't automatically raise speed limits. Instead, it would allow the IDOT to examine each area of highway to determine whether the higher limits would be appropriate. The bill now goes to the state Senate.
