Residents in the Hunts Point area of New York have a plan to keep truck traffic going to and from the Hunts Point Market and industrial area out of their residential neighborhoods.

According to the New York Daily News, a South Bronx organization known as Mothers on the Move has presented a traffic study with proposed new truck routes to Mayor Giuliani and the Department of Transportation Commissioner.
More than 11,000 trucks go through Hunts Point daily, according to the report, and that number is expected to increase with a new fish market slated to open in the area.
The report, drafted by a traffic engineer, calls for the removal of several thoroughfares as truck routes, making drivers take alternate, less-populated streets to the Hunts Point Market. It also recommends adding traffic signals, signs and medians to neighborhood streets.
A DOT spokesman said the city has already made several improvements to address traffic concerns in Hunts Point, but they would take a look at the proposal.
