Nov. 24 – October deliveries of heavy-duty trucks set another record as the industry headed toward an all-time high in annual sales.

Sales of 19,002 heavy trucks last month were 5.2% higher than a year ago, according to the American Automobile Manufacturers Association. Year-to-date deliveries of 170,798 trucks were nearly 17% higher.
Analysts are now predicting that 1998 heavy truck sales will break the 1995 record of 201,303 Class 8 trucks.
However, the AAMA may not be around to see it, reports the Journal of Commerce. The group decided to disband after Chrysler’s merger with Germany’s Daimler-Benz.
Freightliner’s market share rose to 34.5%, including Sterling Truck and the rest of Ford’s heavy trucks. Navistar International was in second place with 19% after its October sales dropped 20.7% from the year before. Mack was in third place with a 12.1% share.
