Heartland Express Inc. has placed an order for 2,800 International 9400i trucks -- predominantly powered by the Cummins ISX engine -- to replace its current fleet of trucks over the next three years.

"We are committed to providing our customers with the most reliable and durable engines, along with the lowest total operating costs," said Jeff Jones, Cummins vice president of sales and support. "The order from Heartland Express demonstrates the confidence that customers have in Cummins to provide the best products, along with the lowest life cycle costs."
Cummins ISX engines feature the patented and proven Cummins Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VG Turbo) by Holset that constantly adjusts airflow based on several factors, including altitude and temperature, providing improved transient response and vehicle performance. Because the VG Turbo has only one moving part in the hot exhaust stream, it is more reliable and durable, according to the engine builder. Cummins ISX engine was the first heavy-duty truck engine certified and compliant to the October 2002 emissions standards. More than 52,000 Cummins heavy-duty truck engines have been put into service since October 2002 with more than 3.2 billion miles of in-service use.
The Heartland Express order is for the Cummins ISX 435 ST, a rating that is unique to the Cummins/International partnership. ST, or SmartTorque, ratings provide up to 200 additional lb.-ft. of torque while operating in the top two gears of the truck.
Deliveries of the truck order began in May 2004 and will continue through the end of 2006.
