North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven vetoed a portion of a bill that would have raised the speed limit on the state's Interstates
from 70 to 75 mph.
The 75-mph limit was included in the state Department of Transportation's spending bill. This was the first time Hoeven had used his "line-item" veto power, which allows him to veto selected portions of the Legislature's spending bills.
Hoeven said the fines for speeding weren't severe enough, despite a separate bill passed Thursday that would call for larger fines but fewer penalty points for people caught speeding on I-94 or I-29.
The Senate was unable to override the veto, with 22 votes to override falling short of the 33 needed.
