Ignore an emergency vehicle in Illinois and you could face a $10,000 fine.

Gov. George Ryan signed "Scott's Law" last week, named for Chicago fireman Scott Gillen, killed last December when a car allegedly roared past flared and emergency lights and crushed him against a fire truck.
The law calls for a fine of up to $10,000 for drivers who don't proceed cautiously around parked police cruisers, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles with their lights activated, according to the Associated Press. If your failure to yield causes an accident, you can lose your license for up to two years.
Gillen's death was not an isolated incident. Not long after the firefighter was killed, a sheriff's deputy was struck and killed as he helped a tow truck driver on the side of the road. About half of accidents involving state police cruisers happen when they are parked with emergency lights flashing.
