Freightliner announced a voluntary recall of approximately 133,000 vehicles yesterday to check for brake pins that could cause brakes to be inoperable.

An accident in Lincoln, Neb., earlier this month in which a Freightliner dump truck lost its primary braking capability and struck two vehicles, fatally injuring two people, prompted an investigation.
According to a statement issued by the National Transportation Safety Board’s Acting Chairman Jim Hall, the investigation, conducted by the Safety Board in cooperation with the Lincoln Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement and Freightliner, revealed that a brake pin had fractured, rendering the brakes inoperable.
Hall said the investigation also revealed that related incidents have been reported elsewhere. Further examination of other Freightliner trucks also disclosed the potential for the brake pin to fracture exists, and the problem was not limited to the truck involved in the accident.
