Freightliner has issued a recall on approximately 133,000 of its medium-duty and heavy-duty Business Class trucks built with air brakes since May 1991.

The brake pedal push rod, which activates the service brakes, may bend and later fracture, resulting in a loss of braking. The company plans on replacing the brake pedal push rod with one of a larger diameter.
Freightliner is in the process of notifying affected customers about the recall. A first priority will be given to vehicles with dual steer, and next to vehicles in construction, refuse, fire and emergency applications. Dealers will have replacement parts available by the beginning of next week for the dual steer vehicles and most are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, to remedy the situation. Parts for the remaining vehicles will be available as soon as possible. In addition, representatives at the toll-free Freightliner’s Customer Assistance Center (800) FTL-HELP are available to answer questions about the recall.
Owners of affected Freightliner Business Class trucks are being advised to visually inspect their vehicles for bent brake pedal push rods. If the rod is not bent, the vehicle is safe to operate. Information on how to inspect for a bent rod is available on the Freightliner’s website, www.freightliner.com. If the rod is bent, owners should contact Freightliner’s Customer Assistance Center at 800-FTL-HELP or their dealer for replacement arrangements.
